Glorious History of Kanchipuram Silk Craft

The sight of the Kanchipuram silk saree always brings a delightful expression on a woman’s face. Kanchipuram sarees are a symbol of India’s culture and civilization. India is known for its handwoven textile heritage, and Kanchipuram silk is among them. Kanchipuram silk sarees are lauded for their intricate craftsmanship and finesse. Kanchivaram silk sarees are exclusively known for their rich gold borders, traditional designs, and dense fabric in contrasting colours. Every motif and design of the Kanchipuram silk saree narrates a story. Kanchipuram silk sarees have dominated the world of south Indian saree for years now. Indeed, they are the dream saree of every South Indian to-be-brides.

History & Evolution of Kanchipuram Silk / Kanjivaram Silk

During the reign of the Chola dynasty in Kanchipuram, the king took the initiative in the silk trade. And during King Krishna Devaraya's rule, weaving communities of Andhra Pradesh, the Saligars and Devangas migrated to Kanchipuram town, and thus, the silk industry saw new growth. These two communities exclusively excelled at the weaving skill. Although, during the French invasion in the 17th century, the weaving industry had a hiccup and the operation was paused. Later, in the 18th century, the silk weaving industry was resumed and became the main occupation for many in the town. Today, Kanchipuram silks rank the most popular around the globe.

Making of Kanchipuram Silk / Kanchi Pattu

The silk is obtained from the sericulture of mulberry worms, i.e. silk extracted from domesticated silkworms that feed on mulberry tree leaves. The silk yarns extracted from such silkworms are usually fine, soft, and of a lighter tone. Then, the raw silk yarns are dipped into hot water and mixed with preferred colored powders to dye the silk. Once the dyed yarns are dried thoroughly, they are put into the rice starch natively called kanji (the excess water after the rice is cooked) before and after weaving the saree to add stiffness. As for the zari, pure silver threads coated with a gold color are used in the saree weaving to enrich the appeal of the saree. The zari thread consists of 57% silver and 0.6% gold. The body, border, and pallu of a Kanchipuram silk saree are woven separately and then interlocked together. It is interlocked in such a way the joining could not be identified from the front.

It takes about 10 to 15 days to weave a single silk saree, however, it may differ depending on the design intricacy done in the saree. The saree border color and design are usually different from the body. The saree border and pallu are usually weaved separately and then interlocked to the body so strongly that even if the saree tears the border will not detach. The zari comprises 57 percent silver and 0.6 percent gold.

Design Inspiration

The motifs showcased on the sarees are not merely decorative patterns, but beyond that, which hold a strong aesthetic appeal and symbolic meaning. The designs manifested on the silk saree are temple carvings, checks, stripes, buttas, mythical creatures, birds, animals, flower leaves, etc. With the change in trend, a lot of contemporary art also is expressed on the saree, like, the images of the bride and groom are convoluted on the saree on an order base. There are a variety of Kanchipuram silk sarees like simple border, temple border, floral Kanchipuram, traditional Kanchipuram, and modern Kanchipuram.

It is always tricky to find authentic Kanchipuram silk sarees, as there are too many retailers and wholesalers in the market selling them. But not every store offers you authentic ones. So, you are suggested to buy Kanchipuram sarees from well-known stores. India is a country with many traditions and festivals. People from North to South celebrate various festivals and some together as a whole. Festivals bring family and friends together to spend time, have fun and indulge in lots of food.  Diwali is one such festival everyone in India loves to celebrate. Festivals allow spending time with family & friends and doll ourselves up, the most favourite part for women.

Why is Diwali celebrated?

There are various stories associated as to why Diwali is celebrated, popular among them is that returning of Rama to Ayodhya along with his brother Lakshman and wife Sita, after the 14 years of exile and vanquishing the demon king Ravana, and conquering Lanka. The residence of Ayodhya welcomed them by decorating the entire city with earthen lamps symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Thus, the festival of Diwali is celebrated in honour of Rama's victory.

Diwali falls 21 days after the Dussehra, a five days festival. From Adults to kids, everyone love celebrating Diwali. As Diwali is all about a get-together with family and close friends, it is pretty normal to get excited about the dressing part. So, let us see the trending styles of this season.

Saree, Not Sorry!

In the face of many fashionable women clothing, one such staple and timeless kind are Saree. It remains to be the essential clothing to every woman of India. Be it a Silk or designer saree, they exude a unique elegance and glamour of their own. For those who are planning for a saree, you don’t have to limit it to a silk or cotton saree, rather go with an organza saree or pre-stitched saree, as they seem to be a lot in the trend now and also, they are super appealing and comfortable.

A classy jacket

If you are confused to choose between an ethnic or contemporary outfit, then a jacket could do the magic. You just need a cropped blouse (even the ones that you pair it up with your denim) and a pair of palazzos, sharara or even a skirt and style it with a long jacket matching it with long jhumkis and sleek hairstyle and you are ready to rock.

Crop Up with a Crop blouse lehenga

Lehenga choli is a fuller silhouette enhancing a women body with elegance. Recently the typical cholis are replaced with cropped blouses to go with lehenga skirts to achieve a quirky look. The cropped top lehengas are stylish and go perfect for the evening festivities.

Gather up with a Gathered dress

Gathered styles are fluid, long length dresses in an appealing bodice attached with a gathered skirt. A cold shoulder or strapped gathered style dress with a simple net dupatta delivers you nothing less than an aesthetic style. Long drop earrings with a simple choker neckpiece and sleek ponytail are sure to fetch you compliments.

Peppy peplum suits

POWERFUL STYLES FOR THE POWERFUL FESTIVAL

THE MIGHTY DUSSEHRA IS HERE

We are nearing Dussehra, which is not just a day or two festival, but a festival of 10 days. Dussehra, a festival dedicated to Goddess Durga that falls in the month of Ashwin (September/ October) every year and is celebrated across India.

Significance of Navarathri?

When the king of demons, Mahishasura, started a war against Gods in heaven, all the gods, including Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, amalgamated their divine powers to create the mother of power, goddess Durga. Goddess Durga using all her mighty powers fought with Mahishasura for nine days and, the tenth day of victory is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami (Good over evil).

For the nine nights, women observe fasting with absolute devotion and prayers by dedicating each day to one avatar of Durga Devi. To break it in simple first three days, Shakti- the deity of power, next three days, Lakshmi- the deity of wealth, and last three days, Saraswathi- the deity of knowledge and wisdom. Also, some women wear particular coloured clothing each day.

With a line of events on each day, we go in and out for ethnic outfits. You may decide the outfit based on colours or comfort or even the scale of the celebration. Lehenga choli, Silk sarees or salwar suits are the most adorned outfits.

Appealing Nine-Yards:

Sarees are never out of trend as they exude one with elegance to the fullest. Especially Banarasi silk or Kanchipuram silk or other kinds of silk sarees are loved by most women, as they bestow one with effortless grace. Usually, during Dussehra, demand for white or red silk and Banarasi silk sarees are high. So, if you are planning for a saree look then, choose red or white silk sarees or even Banarasi silk that adds to the vibes of Dussehra. No matter what other outfit you choose to wear; Saree, always gives you that ultra-feminine finish.

Mesmerizing Salwar Suit:

Salwar kameez is a timeless garment found in every girl's wardrobe. They are not only comfortable but also appealing. Salwar kameez gives a beautiful fit and accentuates the figure of a woman gracefully, accentuating the curves in a modest, elegant manner. With the evolution of fashion over the years, they are popular right now, from ramps to television shows, movies. Anarkali suit is always a win-win; if not, you can opt for a stylish dhoti suit or sharara suit to flaunt quirkiness.

Twirl that Lehenga:

For the Garba and Dandiya nights, lehenga sets are the best picks. The flary ensembles take you to a greater height. Under this class comes the Banarasi lehenga and crop top lehenga. You can go either go with a heavily embellished lehenga choli with zari weaved lehenga or with a silk lehenga styled with a contemporary blouse or crop top. Also, floral printed silk lehengas make a great option for dandiya nights.

As it is a festival of good over evil; symbolizing beautiful life after the storm, bright coloured outfits go right for the celebration. Again, anything worn with a pinch of confidence looks good. There are a variety of outfits out there that bring in the Dussehra festivities

WISHING YOU A HAPPY UGADI (“Yugadi Habbada Shubhashaayaglu”)

This is how we people of India respect our Culture of festivities and traditions by greeting one another on grand festivals. Moving on to give the insights of Ugadi.

Ugaḍi endarenu (What is Ugadi)?

This auspicious day is the start of a New Year for the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka in India where people believe it is the first full moon of the spring marking the beginning of the lunar New Year and prosperity that usually falls in March or April. The term Ugadi is coined from the Sanskrit words stating “Yuga” as age and “adi” as the beginning. It is also believed that in spring, the sun shines brighter than usual and nature is seen regaining its life with new buds and fresh leaves after a long winter sleep. The outgrowth of a fresh new life is everywhere and that’s the reason why it is referred to as the birth of a new era.

At this festival, greetings are exchanged amongst people with the phrase “Yugadi Habbada Shubhaashayaglu” (Greetings for the festival of Yugadi) or Hosa Varshada  Shubhaashayaglu (Greeting for the new year).

Just like on other festivities, and like other preparations Ugadi has a set of unique preparations and cultures that are followed. The day is ascertained by drawing colourful patterns at the entrance called Rangoli and since Mango leaves are considered auspicious, they are used for the decorations on doors called Torana. During the festival, Pooja is done in a way where the idol of God would be washed with oil and decorated with jasmine flowers and clothes.

Flavour of Ugadi

Just like every other sweet delicacy prepared on festive occasions, “Pulihora” and “Bobbatlu” are the authentic dishes prepared in every house by women on this festival. Pachadi is the symbolic dish and one of the main rituals for the Ugadi Festival, believing the dish is not just sweet but a combining episode of sweet, sour, salty and bitter reminding people of the following year.

Gleaming Trends for your Festive mood

Doubtlessly, we all want to look good at all our festive occasions amongst family, friends and ourselves. Buying new clothes to rejoice in festivities have become an important trend followed by generations. While men are traditionally dressed in a white or off-white linen shirt paired with a cotton lungi embellished with gold zari, women are magnificently appareled in the traditionalistic weaves rooted in heritage. Handcrafted sarees hued in rich colours such as pure Mysore Silk, Kanchipuram Silk, Uppada Silk, and Gadwal Silk are the most alluring weaves women opt to drape on this special occasion followed by half sarees, Lehenga choli, Indowestern dress, and so forth. Welcome to the celebration of Colours and joy!

Holi, the festival of colours and fun is not very far away and we are excited. Holi is a festival celebrated in commemorating good over evil. It is a festival with dancing, singing, and throwing of powder colours and coloured water on one other. To some families, it is a religious ceremony and to some, it is all about a fun-filled exciting day spent with friends and relatives with lots of food.

Why is Holi celebrated?

Although numerous stories say the reason for celebrating Holi but popular of them all is the Holika Dahan story. It is said that a king named Hiranyakashipu was a powerful person during his reign and considered himself to be God and wanted everyone in his kingdom to worship him. However, his son, Prahalad refused and worshipped Lord Vishnu. The Angry Hiranyakashipu tries to kill his son but fails and goes to his sister Holika for help. Holika who is said to be immune to fire plays a trick and ask Prahalad to sit with her on a pyre, due to her evil intentions she burned down to ashes and Prahalad gained immunity and was saved. Thus, Holi is celebrated after the Holika Dahan, which symbolizes the victory over evil.

Traditions of Holi celebration

Holi is celebrated for two days mainly, on the first day that is Chhoti Holi or Holika Dahan, after the sunset people from family gather around the bonfire, perform puja and then light it. The second day of festival is called Rangwali Holi or Badi Holi. On this day people celebrate the festival by applying colours and greet one another and party. A lot of music, food, games are conducted on this particular day.

What are the apt styles for the Holi festival?
