This is how we people of India
respect our Culture of festivities and traditions by greeting one another on grand
festivals. Moving on to give the insights of Ugadi.
Ugaḍi
endarenu (What is Ugadi)?
This auspicious day is the start of a New Year for the
states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka in India where
people believe it is the first full moon of the spring marking the beginning of
the lunar New Year and prosperity that usually falls in March or April. The
term Ugadi is coined from the Sanskrit words stating “Yuga” as age and “adi” as
the beginning. It is also believed that in spring, the sun shines brighter than
usual and nature is seen regaining its life with new buds and fresh leaves
after a long winter sleep. The outgrowth of a fresh new life is everywhere and
that’s the reason why it is referred to as the birth of a new era.
At this festival, greetings are exchanged amongst
people with the phrase “Yugadi Habbada Shubhaashayaglu” (Greetings for the
festival of Yugadi) or Hosa Varshada
Shubhaashayaglu (Greeting for the new year).
Just like on other festivities, and like other
preparations Ugadi has a set of unique preparations and cultures that are
followed. The day is ascertained by drawing colourful patterns at the entrance
called Rangoli and since Mango leaves are considered auspicious, they are used
for the decorations on doors called Torana. During the festival, Pooja is done
in a way where the idol of God would be washed with oil and decorated with
jasmine flowers and clothes.
Flavour of
Ugadi
Just like every other sweet delicacy prepared on
festive occasions, “Pulihora” and “Bobbatlu” are the authentic dishes prepared
in every house by women on this festival. Pachadi is the symbolic dish and one
of the main rituals for the Ugadi Festival, believing the dish is not just
sweet but a combining episode of sweet, sour, salty and bitter reminding people
of the following year.
