In the early
80’s the fashion scenario in India was completely different. It was the era of
self consciousness. It was this era when Salwar Kameez was crafted with
shoulder pads. Also silhouette became more masculine during this time period. The
80’s witnessed a high competition between different fashion designers. The
price tags of the garments reached a peak during this era. But this was not the
scenario in the 90’s. In the 90’s the price tags of the clothes started taking
a downside journey. Not only this, but the business of fashion shows also
started declining in this era. But this was not the end of Indian ethnic wear industry.
There came a point when the steady level was reached. In the 21st
century Indian ethnic wear market boomed again with some sensible designing and
new innovative designers.

India is one of the biggest players in the international fashion arena. It is a
very big exporter of fabrics and accessories.
India’s strength lies not only in its ethnicity but also in its raw materials. India
is the third largest producer of cotton and fifth largest producer of man - made
fibres. Indian ethnic designs are in great demand all over the world and this
has contributed a lot in the growth of Indian ethnic wear market.
